LeBron James Doubles Down on J. Cole Fandom Amid Drake Tension
LeBron James continues to show his support for J. Cole’s ‘The Fall-Off’ despite recent lyrical jabs from Drake on his latest project, ‘ICEMAN’.
It has been a year defined by high-profile musical releases, ranging from mainstream blockbusters to underground projects that are already shaping year-end discussions. However, for NBA icon LeBron James, one particular album remains in heavy rotation: J. Cole’s The Fall-Off. During a recent interview, when asked about his current listening habits, James did not hesitate to express his admiration for the North Carolina lyricist. “What am I listening to right now? J. Cole. His whole album, The Fall-Off,” James stated.
This public endorsement comes as little surprise to those who have followed the intersection of James’s off-court interests and his support for hip-hop culture. Earlier this year, the basketball star made headlines—and became a viral meme—after he was spotted carrying a vinyl copy of The Fall-Off while arriving at the Kaseya Center for a game against the Miami Heat. J. Cole later revealed in a conversation with Carmelo Anthony that he had brought his sons to that specific game, and James had graciously agreed to sign the record for him.
“On his way, he had The Fall-Off vinyl—he brought it so I could sign it,” Cole shared. “My oldest is getting into basketball, Bron is his No. 1, and I hit Bron, and he graciously said he would do it.”
Navigating the Drake and Kendrick Lamar Dynamic
While James’s appreciation for J. Cole appears straightforward, the timing of his comments is notable given the current landscape of hip-hop. The basketball star’s musical preferences have recently been scrutinized in light of Drake’s latest releases, including the album ICEMAN and its companion projects, Habibti and Maid Of Honour. ICEMAN reportedly contains several pointed references to James, seemingly stemming from a cooling of their relationship following the “Pop Out” event.
James’s vocal support for Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”—highlighted by videos of him dancing to the track during the Summer Olympics—has reportedly contributed to the friction with Drake. On the track “Make Them Remember,” Drake appears to address the situation directly, rapping, “Please stop asking what’s going on with 23 and me, I’m a real n***a, and he’s not.” As of now, James has maintained his silence regarding the specific lyrics, choosing instead to focus on his appreciation for the music he enjoys.
