Joe Thomas Prepares Comeback Album: Everything We Know
After a decade-long hiatus, R&B icon Joe Thomas is returning to the studio to craft his most personal project to date.
When Joe released My Name Is Joe Thomas in 2016, he famously declared it his final studio album. Now, a decade later, the R&B crooner is officially breaking his silence and preparing a highly anticipated comeback album. This return marks a significant moment for fans who have long awaited new material from one of the genre’s most consistent voices.
In a recent conversation with Jordan Rose of Complex, Joe opened up about the deliberate nature of his hiatus. “It took me about 10 years to get this together, but that was by choice,” he explained. “It’s completely different in terms of musically where I’m going. It’s still R&B, but I just love the influences that the other genres have as well.”
A New Creative Direction
Expanding on his creative process during an appearance on the R&B Money podcast with J. Valentine, Joe emphasized the emotional weight of this upcoming project. “I’ve got 12 albums — and that’s a lot of material — but this album is the most important to me,” he shared. “It’s such a beautiful process just to do this album the way I’m doing it because I don’t feel no pressure, no rush, nothing.”
Joe revealed that he is taking a hands-on approach, writing and producing the project himself. He aims to capture a specific, timeless quality, noting, “It’s eclectic in a certain way, but it’s just that feel-good. And that’s one thing for me that’s been missing in R&B. I want the goosebumps once again.” To achieve this, he has incorporated live instrumentation, including an 80-piece Budapest orchestra, drawing inspiration from legends like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder.
Release Details and Future Plans
While an official title remains elusive, Joe has been considering Dress Accordingly, inspired by one of the album’s standout tracks. He is also weighing the possibility of calling it My Name Is Joe Part 3. Regardless of the title, the singer is committed to an independent release strategy, with a strong desire to offer the project in physical formats, specifically vinyl.
Although the rollout is expected to fully take shape in 2027, fans may get a taste of the new music before the end of this year. “I want the rollout to be nice,” Joe noted, confirming that at least one single is likely on the horizon.
Joe’s last project, My Name Is Joe Thomas, was a commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. As he prepares to step back into the spotlight, the industry is watching closely to see how this R&B veteran will redefine his sound for a new era.
