J. Cole Teases New Song From ‘The Fall Off’ In ‘Smack DVD’ Styled Vlog
J. Cole is ready for The Fall Off, are you?
On Wednesday (Feb. 21), Cole teased a new track from his new era on a vlog called Might Delete Later Vol. 1.
The video takes fans through a day in the life of Jermaine with multiple callbacks to the Smack DVD days of the early 2000s. Cole could be seen goofing off with his Dreamville cohorts, Ibrahim H. and Bas, as he gears up for his current tour with Drake. Lil Durk also makes an appearance as the Fayetteville, NC emcee congratulates him on their Grammy award-winning single, “All My Life.” The vlog shows more of Cole’s personality and fun-side than anything, with shots showing the historic rapper enjoying life lately.
Might Delete Later Vol. 1 is then interrupted by a slick music video, teasing a new song from Cole’s The Fall Off era.
“Said ‘I was finished,’ but I want another two Summers/Hall of Famer, hungrier than all the newcomers,” Cole kicks off the goosebump-inducing track. Later in the unnamed song, the emcee likens his upcoming album, The Fall Off, to Jay-Z‘s classic debut LP, Reasonable Doubt.
J. Cole opened up about his much-talked-about album with The Safe Space Podcast. In November 2023, Cole was asked about The Fall Off and its inspiration. He explained that the title arrived when he was comfortable with his success and began mulling over retirement.
“Oh, you lost a step in this regard,” he recalled telling himself. “I had a real talk with myself… ‘You made it to where you wanted to make it to. Do you wanna keep going or do you just want to chill and go start a family? Do you want to retire right now?’”
He explained that, if he was going to call it quits, he wanted to walk away under his own power. Cole explained that he didn’t want his career tarnished by years of him falling off.
The Fall Off was originally set to release in 2020. However, that LP was pushed back, and fans received The Off-Season in 2021, instead.
