Big Sean Opens Up About Fatherhood In “On Up” Music Video

Big Sean has unveiled the next preview of his forthcoming album, and this one serves as an extra special love letter to his son, Noah. Titled “On Up,” the music video recruits the help of his parents, Jhené Aiko, who is the mother of his son, and other family members to show “how adored he is by his by his family.”

The visual is directed by Lawrence Lamont, Noah’s God Father, and shot in the POV of the baby. It opens up with Sean and Jhené getting the baby from his crib and then takes viewers through a full day of activities. As the Detroit rapper takes Noah out for a walk, feeds him a meal, and even watches him take his first steps, he spits introspective bars about what fatherhood has taught him so far.

“I look into my son’s eyes and still see his innocence/ I see my inner child in him and still the remnants/ Will he lose it to the world as an emanator/ Or is it something that in me and his mama had instilled in him/ And the confidence you lose you could build again/ He only 9 months barely sitting up he almost fell over, I called him and told him to (Get on up),” Sean raps over a sample of “Get On Up” by Jodeci.

The “I Know” artist also expressed his appreciation for the video on Instagram, making sure to give a shoutout to his lady and the director. “One of my favorite videos, full of my favorite people, and shot by Noah’s God Dad @lawrencelamont. I appreciate my family being apart and especially @jheneaiko cause she was exhausted but still came thru to help make this idea such a special video for me,” he wrote.

“Hopefully one Day Noah will look back n see how adored he is by his family, this video doesn’t even show a fraction of that honestly. My side of the family being from Detroit dont get to spend as much time with Noah, but glad they were here for this piece. Love to all the parents, grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, etc that make it happen!”

The road to the album’s release hasn’t been the smoothest, as the project was leaked last month. However, Sean made the best out of the occurrence and chose to capitalize on the situation. With the attention on him, he decided to drop more cuts from the LP for fans to hear. “Might as well start droppin, before they leak it all, got damn. BIG SEAN x THE ALCHEMIST soon,” he tweeted on July 17 with a snippet attached. That Friday (July 19), he unleashed another official single, “YES.”
