Michael Jordan’s Game-Worn Jersey Sells At Auction

A rare piece of basketball history has set a new benchmark in the memorabilia market. A Michael Jordan game-worn jersey, specifically from Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals, was recently sold by Joopiter for a staggering $12,260,000. This massive transaction establishes a new world auction record for any NBA jersey worn during a game.

During that pivotal contest against the Utah Jazz, Jordan donned the white home jersey while leading the Chicago Bulls to a dominant 96-54 victory. The performance was instrumental in securing a 2-1 series lead for Chicago, which ultimately claimed its sixth and final championship in six games. Jordan contributed 24 points to the effort that evening.

The item, featured in the "Driven to Greatness" collection by the auction house established by Pharrell Williams, arrived with a MeiGray photomatching certificate and a verified history of private ownership. Before the bidding concluded, experts at Joopiter had projected a final price between $10 million and $15 million, placing the final result squarely within expectations.

What makes this specific jersey particularly significant is its rarity as the only known white jersey from that legendary 1998 Finals run to ever reach the public market. It successfully surpassed the previous record held by Jordan’s Game 1 jersey from the same series, which fetched $10.1 million at Sotheby's in 2022.

The skyrocketing value of Jordan's gear is largely attributed to the lack of league-wide tracking protocols in the 1990s. Because teams frequently laundered and repurposed uniforms, verified, single-game-worn pieces from that era are exceptionally scarce compared to modern standards, where jerseys are often rotated out after every match. This scarcity continues to drive intense competition among collectors, cementing Jordan's items as the gold standard for sports memorabilia sales across all disciplines.
