The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has officially unveiled its highly anticipated class of 2026 inductees. The announcement was made during a special, music-themed episode of American Idol on ABC and Disney+, where Ryan Seacrest and Hall of Famer Lionel Richie revealed the names of the legendary artists set to receive music’s highest honor.

Among the esteemed honorees are the incomparable Luther Vandross and the soulful, enigmatic Sade. These icons are slated to be inducted during a star-studded ceremony scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Fans will be able to experience the celebration when the event airs in December on ABC and Disney+.

“Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music’s highest honor,” said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Chairman John Sykes. “We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year’s ceremony — it’s going to be an unforgettable night.”

Both Vandross and the band Sade have been included in the performer category, a distinction reserved for artists whose originality, impact, and influence have fundamentally changed the course of music history. While this marks a significant first-time nomination and induction for the late Luther Vandross, Sade previously earned a nomination in 2024, making this year’s inclusion a long-awaited recognition of their enduring legacy in contemporary R&B.

The performer category for 2026 is rounded out by a diverse group of influential acts, including Wu-Tang Clan, Billy Idol, Phil Collins, Oasis, Iron Maiden, and the combined force of Joy Division/New Order. Additionally, the Early Influence Award will recognize the profound impact of artists such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Celia Cruz, and Fela Kuti.

The selection process remains rigorous, requiring artists to have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to their nomination. While the induction of these legends is a cause for celebration, the announcement also highlighted the competitive nature of the process. New Edition, despite receiving over one million fan votes, was not selected this year. In a gracious statement, the group expressed their appreciation for the overwhelming support and confirmed their commitment to continuing their storied career, looking ahead to future opportunities.

As the industry prepares for the November ceremony, the induction of artists like Vandross and Sade serves as a testament to the lasting power of authentic songwriting and the timeless nature of their contributions to the global musical landscape.
