PJ Morton Signs Label Partnership Deal With SRG-ILS Group
Grammy-winning singer and musician PJ Morton has signed a partnership deal with SRG-ILS Group via his label Morton Records.
SRG-ILS, which is globally distributed by Virgin Music Group, is also home to artists such as Lalah Hathaway, Johnny Gill and Keke Palmer.
“I am excited about this new partnership,” says Morton. “When Walter Millsap initially brought the idea to me, I knew it would be a perfect fit for what Morton Records, and I were trying to do to take it to the next level.”
Claude Villani, CEO and founder of SRG-ILS Group, adds, “PJ Morton is a generational talent and everyone here at SRG/ILS is extremely excited to be part of his upcoming projects.”
Under his new partnership, Morton will begin releasing new music later this year, which includes a new album.
Morton’s deal with SRG-ILS follows his decade-long partnership with EMPIRE. Under the latter company, he released some of his most prized works, including Gumbo (2017), Gumbo Unplugged (Live) (2018), PAUL (2019), Watch The Sun (2022) and Cape Town to Cairo (2024).
He recorded the latter album during his month-long trip in Africa, where he visited South Africa, Nigeria, Ghan and Egypt.
“As a Black American who had never been to South or West Africa, I knew there was something there waiting for me,” said Morton, born in New Orleans. “So I put a little pressure on myself to make a full record in a month, but I also said, ‘If I’m gonna go to Africa, I want to see Africa.’ We made music, but we also formed connections. We made new friends, and this is just the start.”
Morton launched Morton Records after parting ways with Young Money/Cash Money Records, where he released his major-label debut album, New Orleans (2013).
Earlier this month, Morton won Best Gospel Album at the 68th Grammys for Heart of Mine, his joint album with Darrel Walls of The Walls Group. The album was released under Gumbo Studios/Tyscot Records.
