Mustard Plans To Make Rapping Debut On New Album, ‘Faith Of A Mustard Seed’
Mustard vowed to never rap when he got his explosive start as a hit-making producer, but all of that is about to change.
The Los Angeles native has revealed that he will be making his rapping debut on his new album, Faith Of A Mustard Seed.
During a recent interview on Real 92.3 LA, he expressed, “There’s a song on my album where I’m rapping at the end. That’s the most vulnerable [moment], because I’ve never rapped, nothing like that.”
Mustard confessed that he chose to start rapping because he’s ready to tell his story.
“I’ve been behind the boards so long that nobody has ever heard my side of things,” the 34-year-old explained. “When it comes to anything. Family or friends… so, it’s like, I think it was just the time. I owe it to my fans to show you guys what’s been going on the last five years of my life. COVID, divorce, everything. Sometimes, people need to hear it from you, not from the internet.”
Mustard described the record as a “real song,” not a turnt up record like his latest hit with Kendrick Lamar, “Not Like Us.” The pair performed the diss track live for the first time at K. Dot’s Juneteenth concert, ‘The Pop Out.’
Without naming the sentimental record, Mustard did note that he’s “definitely a little nervous” about it, but “I feel like anytime you’re nervous, that’s a good thing.” He admitted that he’s played the song for Vince Staples, Tyga, YG, and Jay-Z, who called it “beautiful.” Mustard jokingly replied, “Well, if it’s that beautiful, just rap at the end of it. Gimme a verse. Show me how beautiful it is.”
The LP is described as a “deeply personal and conceptual album [that] reflects on the past five years of Mustard’s life, exploring his upbringing in South Central Los Angeles, his health journey, fatherhood, divorce, and the loss of loved ones during the pandemic.” There will be some surprise features, but the lead single, “Parking Lot” with Travis Scott, is out now.
Faith Of A Mustard Seed is slated for release on July 26.
