Yo Gotti and JAY-Z Help Mississippi State Prison Inmates Sue Over COVID-19 Outbreak
Yo Gotti and JAY-Z are continuing their fight to change Mississippi’s prison system.
A few months ago, the duo along with Team Roc, helped inmates at Mississippi State Penitentiary secure legal representation so that they could sue for neglect, due to insufferable living conditions. Now, the duo and Team Roc, have secured legal representation for 200 inmates at Mississippi State Penitentiary and are suing the prison’s new Department of Corrections Commissioner, Nathan Burl Cain, and Centurion, the healthcare provider for the Mississippi prison system.
The complaint states that the terrible living conditions in the prison have not been addressed or dealt with since the initial lawsuit was made back in January. These “cruel and tortuous” conditions have been made even worse by the COVID-19 pandemic which is sweeping through prisons across the country.
A COVID-19 questionnaire was given to inmates by Jay, Gotti and Team Roc, and revealed that many of the men suffered from symptoms of COVID-19 and were not being adequately treated. The questionnaire’s also revealed that social distancing protocols were not being taken and that the facility lacked the personal protective equipment (PPE) needed.
“The situation in Parchman is dire. More and more of the incarcerated population are reaching out for help and pleading for immediate medical attention, especially as the coronavirus threatens their lives,” Gotti said in a statement. “Mississippi Governor Reeves, Commissioner Burl Cain and Centene — as the parent company of Parchman’s healthcare provider Centurion — can’t continue to neglect this tragedy and let the death toll rise. We will hold them accountable and fight for the rights of the incarcerated.”
