Mereba Announces New Album ‘The Breeze Grew a Fire,’ Shares New Song ‘Counterfeit’
Alt-R&B singer Mereba will release her first album in more than five years, The Breeze Grew a Fire, on Feb. 14, 2025.
The album will arrive under her new deal with Secretly Canadian, the indie label that has a roster that includes Baby Rose, serpentwithfeet, and Brandon.
The announcement of The Breeze Grew a Fire includes the album cover art and tracklist. Mereba collaborated closely with long-time collaborator and producer Sam Hoffman, whose previous work includes contributions to artists like Durand Bernarr, GAWD, and Lorine Chia.
“For this [album], it went back to me being on my own for the creation of a lot of the songs, and it was really important for me at this time of life because I was a little disconnected from the world, and from who I was,” Mereba says of The Breeze Grew a Fire. “So I was trying to find my way back to myself first. What do I like? What do I want to hear? What do I want to say to people now?”
The Breeze Grew a Fire will be available in digital and streaming formats, as well as CD and vinyl. Per Secretly Canadian’s official store, vinyl copies will be available in black ($24.99) and summer sky ($26.99). Meanwhile, the CD is priced at $14.99.
To mark the album’s announcement, Mereba released the lead single, “Counterfeit.” She co-produced the track with Hoffman, who also plays bass, drums, strings, and synthesizer.
In the second verse, Mereba shares a compelling fame come-up story, highlighting her commitment to success through honesty and integrity, inspiring listeners to prioritize authenticity. “And when I make my multi mill, I did it real / I didn’t sacrifice the feel for the bill,” she sings.
Mereba released “Counterfeit” with an official video directed by Courtney Sofiah Yates and produced by Another Video. In the video, the singer plays two different roles, one attempting to escape the other.
The Breeze Grew a Fire follows Mereba’s debut album, The Jungle Is the Only Way Out, released in 2019 via Interscope Records. That album included notable tracks such as “Heatwave,” featuring 6LACK, and “Sandstorm,” featuring JID.
In 2021, following tracks with Xavier Omär and Berhana, Mereba released AZEB, a compact project featuring the lead single “Rider,” which marked her final release under Interscope Records.
Since then, she has made occasional appearances on various songs and soundtracks, collaborating with artists such as Ravyn Lenae, BLK ODYSSY, Baby Rose, NESTA, and contributing to the soundtrack for Creed III.
