Ella Mai Earns Three New RIAA Certifications, ‘Boo’d Up’ Goes 8x Platinum

Ella Mai has scored three new certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Her breakout single “Boo’d Up” is now certified 8x platinum, with over eight million equivalent units sold.

The cozy track, produced by Mustard, is now two million units away from reaching diamond status (10 million units). It remains her highest-certified single to date.

“Boo’d Up,” which first appeared on Mai’s Ready EP (2017), was released as the lead single from her self-titled debut album in 2018.

The album’s second single, “Trip,” has been upped to 6x platinum by the RIAA, with over six million equivalent units sold.

Ella Mai was released Oct. 12, 2018, via 10 Summers/Interscope Records. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2021, Ella Mai was certified double platinum with over two million equivalent units sold.

Nearly half of the songs from Mai’s debut album have an RIAA award. Here is a breakdown of all the RIAA-certified tracks:

  • “Boo’d Up,” certified 8x platinum (as of May 2024)
  • “Trip,” certified 6x platinum (as of May 2024)
  • “Shot Clock,” certified 2x platinum (as of June 2023)

Circling back to Mai’s other new RIAA award, “This Is” has been certified gold. The piano-laden track appears on the deluxe edition of Mai’s second album, Heart On My Sleeve (2023). The standard version of Heart On My Sleeve was among Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.

Mai has been relatively quiet since wrapping up her Heart On My Sleeve Tour last spring — quiet for good reason. On Monday (May 6), the Grammy winner posted an update on Instagram Stories, noting her next project is almost complete.

“People often ask me how do you when you’re done with a song or an album. In my case, there is really no forumla, timing or order. It is a feeling. One of the best feelings actually. My self-titled debut album was me learning and soaking up such a new exciting environment. [Heart On My Sleeve] was such a hard process, writing through emotional uncertainty and really figuring out who I wanted to be as an artist,” Mai wrote.

She concluded, “This new album has been SO fun to make. I’ve felt so free and so in love with music. The fact that we’re almost done is bittersweet because I don’t want the fun to end but I also can’t wait for you guys to hear it.”
