Timbaland Calls This Migos Song A “Classic”
Timbaland labels a Migos fan-favorite record a classic in conversation with Metro Boomin.
The two producers sat down for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians and discussed hit records, classic songs, and defining the two. In the dialogue, Timbaland gives props to Boomin for his work with the Atlanta trio and calls out a specific chart-topper.
“You did ‘Bad and Boujee.’ That’s a classic. You know that right? There’s a difference between hits and classics,” shared the 52-year-old with the St. Louis native.
“There might be a classic that peaks at Number 23, and another song goes Number One, but you can play them both 10 years later, and you might not even want to hear the One,” added Metro.
Timbaland reiterated, “And ‘Bad and Boujee’ is a classic. Play it today.”
That’s not the only Metro Boomin work the Virginia representative dubbed a classic in their exchange. Later in the conversation, he referenced Future’s 2016 mixtape Purple Reign, which Young Metro executive produced, as well as collaborations with Young Thug.
“But for your records: That Purple Reign album…classic,” shared Timbaland, as Metro replied, “That’s one of my favorites.”
Timbaland continued, “That’s a classic album. I’ll tell you another classic song: [Raps the hook to ‘Mask Off‘]. That will play 10 years from now. You can play that now — it’ll go crazy,” adding later “But [Purple Reign], that’s when I was like, ‘OK, this boy’s nasty.’ I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I knew I had my own bounce, but that bounce threw me off.’ You got the championship ring with that album. And all the stuff you did with Young Thug.”
