Rob49 & Cardi B Want Rich Romance, Childish Gambino Enters A New World, JT Finds Her Glass Slipper, And More Hip-Hop Releases

Three days ago was Friday, which means there are a ton of new releases to look forward to from some of your favorite Hip-Hop artists. To help you ease into the week, check out VIBE’s picks of songs and albums you should hear and add to your soundtrack of life’s festivities.

Rob49 & Cardi B – “On Dat Money”

2024 Rebel/Geffen Records

Rob49 and Cardi B’s “On Dat Money” is all about having rich sex. Why settle for a bed when you can fornicate on top of big stacks of cheddar? Their styles mesh well, with hard-nosed deliveries and haymaker punchlines. This may not have been the collaboration the people were asking for … but it works. The only negative is that this is further proof of a truism in Cardi B’s career; she has always been an impressive feature artist. At just pass six years since her debut album, the people (understandably) want to see what she can do on her sophomore album. This record feels like asking for tickets to see your favorite artist perform live and being given a DVD to watch one of their old concerts at home. In the words of Jadakiss, “It’s good, but it’s not enough.” – Armon Sadler

Big Sean – “Yes”

2024 FF to Def Entertainment, LLC/Def Jam Recordings, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

Big Sean kicked off his album rollout with “Yes,” but the song does not yield affirmative feelings. For a top-notch lyricist, his bars and flows are highly underwhelming. The production is good, but not enough to come away from the song without feeling empty. The chorus is an attempt at an empowering affirmation, but does not have the “it” factor that would make it stick in one’s memory. This record may have been cathartic for Sean, but it is a stutter start to an album that he has dubbed his “best music.” Time will tell if he turns the no’s into yes’s, but right now it’s not looking great. – AS

2024 Quality Control Music, LLC, under exclusive license to UMG Recordings, Inc.

Fresh off the release of her hit single “Okay” and it’s Jeezy-assisted remix, JT of the City Girls returns with her new mixtape City Cinderella. Rapping without her longtime partner Yung Miami, JT impresses throughout this 16-track project, which includes features from DJ Khaled, Stunna Girl, CLIP, and Jeezy. – PB

Lil Yachty – “Let’s Get On Dey A**”

2024 Quality Control Music, LLC, under exclusive license to UMG Recordings, Inc.

Lil Yachty is in a vengeful mood on “Let’s Get On Dey A**.” Though he uses autotune, the dark element to his vocals and delivery makes this sound like a villain’s theme song. Production-wise, this is a top tier record. However, one can’t help but wish that he rapped a bit more. His lines are short with a lot of space in between them. Yachty has shown how well he can continuously rap in the past, and this would have been the ideal track to display those abilities again. Nonetheless, “Let’s Get On Dey A**” is a solid outing. – AS

G Herbo & Skilla Baby – “Shoot”

2024 Machine Entertainment Group LLC, under exclusive license to Republic Records, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

G Herbo and Skilla Baby’s “Shoot” is as direct as a rapper can get in making a declaration. If their associates see their enemies, they expect them to be neutralized. That being said, the chorus is a bit uncreative and repetitive. Herbo’s verse is decent but doesn’t pack anything memorable. Neither artist sounded particularly inspired or animated on the track either. The production is at least easy to bop along too, blending synths with piano keys and light drums. This track would fall low in the hierarchy of songs that discuss gunplay, and looking at Herbo and Skilla’s offerings through their careers, it feels quite underwhelming. – AS

Rodie Senpai & Manny Laurenko – “Money Counter”

Rodie Senpai & Manny Laurenko “Money Counter” cover art

2024 2SEATER Audio

Rodie Senpai and Manny Laurenko’s “Money Counter” is, fittingly, an ode to the perks that come with having money. Both artists are living well, attracting women, and purchasing whatever they would like. However while most monetary anthems are triumphant and high energy, this one is slower and more menacing. It is almost as if they are sonically breathing a sigh of relief as they reflect on their past lives. The autotuned crooning they utilize adds to the emotive nature of this record. Overall, it is a strong track and palatable for people from all walks of life who have ever experienced a financial comeup. – AS
