Lil Wayne Extends Historic Billboard Hot 100 Record For Hits In Consecutive Years
Lil Wayne has notched another accolade under his belt, as the rap legend has extended his record-setting streak of Billboard Hot 100 hits past two decades.
On the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart, dated Nov. 9. 2024, Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia track, “Sticky,” which Lil Wayne appears on alongside GloRilla and Sexyy Red, debuted at No. 14 on the chart. This placement earned Weezy his first Billboard Hot 100 hit of the year, continuing his streak of consecutive years in which he’s appeared on the chart at least once to 21 years.
The last year in which Lil Wayne did not make an appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 was in 2003 and he has never had two consecutive years without a Billboard Hot 100 hit in over 25 years.
Artists who have rivaled Lil Wayne’s Billboard Hot 100 streak include Chris Brown, Kanye West, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. To date, Lil Wayne has appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 187 times throughout his career.
Weezy’s hitmaking ability and longevity were major arguments in his favor amid the controversy surrounding the upcoming Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performance.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the annual performance will feature Kendrick Lamar as the headliner instead of Lil Wayne, despite this year’s Super Bowl taking place in Wayne’s hometown of New Orleans, La., and his incessant campaign to be chosen to take the stage.
The rapper would openly express his disappointment over seemingly being snubbed by members of Roc Nation, who are responsible for curating the Super Bowl Halftime Show as part of JAY-Z’s deal with the NFL.
During his own annual Lil WeezyAna Festival, he spoke of his sore feelings regarding being passed over as the halftime show performer. “I said to myself, ‘I want to be onstage for the Super Bowl one day, in front of my mom,” he told the crowd at New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center earlier this month. “And I worked my a** off to get that f**kin’ position. It was ripped away from me.”
In addition to extending his Billboard Hot 100 streak, Lil Wayne was recently honored by his hometown with his own day, received the key to the city of New Orleans, and was announced as an inductee into the NOLA Walk of Fame.
“On behalf of your city, the entire city of New Orleans, I’m so proud to present you with this key that is a token of appreciation of who you are,” New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell told Weezy during a presentation at the Lil WeezyAna Festival.
“This is your city saying to you, ‘You matter for generations to come — for what you have done, what you are doing and what you will continue to do.’”
