Machel Montano Celebrates Caribbean Culture in New Brooklyn Exhibit
The Brooklyn Public Library honors the legendary soca artist with ‘Journey of a Soca King,’ an immersive exhibition showcasing his profound impact on music.
Acclaimed soca artist and performer Machel Montano’s career and life are being celebrated in a new, immersive exhibit in New York City. The Brooklyn Public Library has officially announced Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition, which opens Saturday, August 22, at its Central Library location. Created by the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, the exhibition serves as a tribute to the artist’s lifelong contributions to soca music and the broader Caribbean culture.
The exhibition will be accompanied by special programming at various library branches across the borough, offering fans a deeper look into the history of the genre. Reflecting on his deep ties to the area, Montano shared his excitement in a statement: “Brooklyn helped raise me. I lived here, I learned here, and some of my earliest audiences were right in these neighborhoods. So for this work to come back to Brooklyn, in a place that is free and open to anybody who walks through the door, means everything.”
A Legacy Rooted in Brooklyn
The exhibition highlights the pivotal role Brooklyn played in the early stages of Montano’s career. In 1984, a nine-year-old Montano spent time in the borough after being selected for a Marie Brooks summer programming scholarship, which provided him with access to workshops that shaped his formative years. He later debuted at Madison Square Garden, supporting calypso legends like the Mighty Sparrow, the Mighty Shadow, and Lord Kitchener. In the mid-1990s, Montano lived on Utica Avenue and recorded “Big Truck,” his first road march with Xtatik in Brooklyn.
Curated Artifacts and Community Impact
Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to view curated artifacts from Montano’s career, including iconic costumes, trophies, and rare vinyl records. The Central Library will also feature a dedicated vinyl listening station, allowing fans to experience the evolution of his sound firsthand. The project is supported by several partners, including Tourism Trinidad Limited, TATIL Insurance, and the Horizons Art Gallery.
Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Public Library, emphasized the importance of the exhibit: “Brooklyn is home to one of the largest Caribbean populations outside the Caribbean, and the Library is committed to preserving and sharing the stories, histories, and cultural contributions of the communities we serve.”
Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition follows the release of his 2026 documentary, Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King, which chronicles his 16 performances during the 2015 Carnival season. The documentary is scheduled to be projected on the facade of the Central Library on Thursday, September 3.
