Stephen A. Smith Responds to NABJ ‘Thumbs Down’ Award
Stephen A. Smith has publicly addressed the National Association of Black Journalists after receiving their ‘Thumbs Down’ award.
Stephen A. Smith has been the subject of intense scrutiny over the last few years, particularly as his public persona has undergone a significant political pivot. The First Take host has increasingly aligned himself with right-wing pundits, including Sean Hannity and Ben Shapiro, a shift that has drawn sharp criticism from various corners of the media landscape. This evolution in his rhetoric has led to accusations that he is distancing himself from the black community, a sentiment that recently culminated in a formal rebuke from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
Over the weekend, the organization awarded Stephen A. Smith the “Thumbs Down” award, citing his conduct over the past year. The move marks a stark departure from the previous year, when the NABJ had invited Smith and his First Take production to their stage. The organization’s decision reflects a growing tension regarding Smith’s recent commentary and his perceived shift in political alignment.
Smith Fires Back at the NABJ
True to his combative style, Smith did not take the criticism lightly. Upon learning of the award, he immediately adopted a defiant tone, threatening the organization with a forthcoming response. In a post shared on social media, Smith made it clear that he intends to address the situation directly.
“This is the epitome of Christmas arriving early,” Smith wrote. “The @NABJ wants to call folks out, fine! You had your turn, now mine is coming. And make no mistake…..,I’m coming. Let’s see who REALLY deserves a Thumbs Down award when it comes to the Black Community, after I say my peace! Remember @NABJ, you asked for it. I’ve shut my mouth for years. Now y’all started something.”
This “mob boss” persona has become a hallmark of Smith’s recent media appearances. Whenever he faces significant pushback, he often frames the criticism as an unjust attack, a tactic that resonates with his core supporters even as it alienates other segments of his audience. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the National Association of Black Journalists will respond to his promised rebuttal.
